The Recycling Debate

Today, Year 6 held their own formal debate where the motion was, "It should be a criminal offence to place recyclable items in your landfill bin."

The children argued for and against the motion and then had a secret vote to decide what changes should be made. In the end, this turned out to be a draw although some children did change their opinion!

3D Shapes

We made wireframes of common 3D shapes

Using art straws and Blu-Tac

Next came 2D nets for 3D shapes

This was fiddly at first

But we soon got the hang of it

The Globe Theatre

The Globe is the only thatched building in London.

Our guide for the day was Sam.

Oooooh and aaaaaaaaah!

It was quite spectacular inside.

We had a choice of four famous eruptions

We all wore odd socks to stop bullying!

Year 6 looked at different aspects of China

Designing fans and writing Chinese characters

The designs were very intricate

The giant panda was everyone's favourite animal

Then we enjoyed a Chinese feast

Year 6 designed a super circuits course with the help of Coach Craig as a sponsored event to raise money for the NSPCC.

WW1 Newspapers

We designed the front page of WW1 newspapers

The headline was the Christmas truce of 1914

The fighting ceased for one day

Both sides came out of their trenches

They exchanged gifts, sang carols...

...and played a legendary game of football

It was not to last however

The soldiers were ordered back...

...and the fighting began again

In Geography we looked at Volcanoes

Lots of people made models and posters

Some even made cakes!

We then set up our models to really erupt

The Globe Theatre - London

We visited Shakespeare's Globe in London

Our tour guide Milly told us fascinating facts

We had many questions to ask

What lies behind these doors?

The stage, of course!

Sitting in the 2p seats!

But here we were known as 'Penny Stinkers'

Some facts were disgusting!

The middle floor was high

The top floor was REALLY high!

Who would be dressed up this year?

Decision made, costume time!

Cross gartering to keep stockings up

This colour was obtained from berries and plants

The dress was 'straight laced' at the front

An apron and bonnet finshed the costume

What a dapper gentleman

Only royalty got to wear purple

Someone always wears the helmet!

We had a fabulous day

The traditional 'Wibbly Wobbly Bridge' group shot

We Remembered

Year 5 and 6 set out on a Remembrance march

We walked respecfully in silence

Our destination, the Normandy War Memorial

We stood silently with our thoughts and prayers

Each one of us planted a poppy and a wooden cross

The sun shone for fallen heroes

The name of each fallen soldier was read out

This is a Normandy village tradition

The flag of the Royal British Legion Normandy

Our school wreath was laid in remembrance

Each class contributed some poppies

Lest We Forget

Inside, we learnt about women in the war

Anybody recognise that nurse?

Tying a wartime sling

Our poems of remembrance were read

Is that really a Spam sandwich?

Many tea time treats were enjoyed

Sandwiches, cakes...

... jam tarts and jelly

The room was decorated with many flags

These are our WW1 projects on display

Mr. Southwell told us many interesting stories

We found our soldier amongst the fallen

We ended the afternoon with some wartime songs

Wyke Travels the World - China

The week began with ceramic Willow Pattern tiles

Some children recreated the Willow pattern

There were many features to include

Blessing cards are sent at Chinese New Year

They send wishes such as good luck and happiness

Terracotta Army figures were drawn using charcoal

Chinese writing required a lot of patience

Each character is formed of different strokes

Our lanterns look amazing hanging in the classroom

Fan-tastic art!

Each soldier is unique down to the smallest detail

The Great Wall of China cannot be seen from space!

We all loved the cute Giant Pandas

Proudly wearing her mum's Chinese outfit

The week ended with a Chinese feast

We learnt how to eat with chopsticks

Some children invented new methods

Some methods used more gravity than skill!

Others shovelled, some dangled...

... and some succeeded at this traditional skill

The noodles were a great hit

The seaweed, not so much!

Some brought their own chopsticks

The seaweed strikes again!

World War 1 Newspapers

We all created the front page of a WW1 newspaper

We reported on the Christmas truce of 1914

This was when soldiers ceased fighting for one day

That day was Christmas Day 1914

They played a game of football on No Man's Land

Shared carols and gifts with each other

Some even had their hair cut

They buried their dead

and had a service on the half-way line

A new school year begins and the new Year 6 are ready to go.

PGL 2018

We wrapped up warm at Avon Heath...

We still went to the beach though!

We lost count at 134,675

The weather didn't dampen our hopes

Some of us even wore sunglasses!

We all came together to build the rafts

Erupting Volcanoes

For Geography, we researched volcanoes

Some eruptions become very famous

This all linked to studying how the Earth works

Some erupted like Hawaiian volcanoes

Some started slowly...

...then made a mess!

This one had a really good crater full of lava!

A Plinian eruption is the most violent

It shoots hot rock and ash into the sky

It all collapses in a pyroclastic flow

This is what destroyed the city of Pompeii

We all enjoyed watching these experiments!

We were raising money for the leavers treat

We still worked hard even though we were relaxed

It took a while to get used to!

Even the adults joined in the fun

This was a MARVELous day

3D Shape and Nets

3D shapes have interesting properties

You always have to measure accurately

Vertices need to be attached carefully

Wireframes of finished shapes

We then looked at how to construct nets

There are many different nets for a cube

These also needed to be accurate

Have we remembered to add extra gluing tabs?

Rulers were essential

The folds also needed to be crisp and straight

Using a compass to draw equilateral triangles

Not an easy task

But it did produce excellent pyramids

Caitie made a map to show where these children are

UNICEF helps in lots of different ways

The presentation was striking from both classes

We are very lucky at Wyke to get all of our rights

Speed Watch

Speed Watch with Surrey Police

We checked carefully how fast cars were travelling

Unfortunately we didn't have to wait long

It was exciting at first

It was also nerve-racking talking to the drivers

We had to ask specific questions about speeding

Weaving

We looked at Weaving for Take One Picture

We used different materials to add texture

We were very neat weavers

Some of the results were stunning

Some used multi-coloured wool to great effect

Junior Citizenship is at Guildford Fire Station

We learned how to deal with a real fire

Clean air is always low down

The RNLI taught us about water safety

The Police were on hand to help us cross the road

Even the park wardens taught us about litter

We identified potential hazards in the park

Train safety was fascinating and very useful

The Dog Warden warned us of the dangers of poo!

Everybody does their bit for recycling

Spring Term - Recycling Heroes

We researched facts about recycling

These would be useful for designing posters

Some of the facts were shocking

We drafted and then produced our designs

Our aim was to persuade and protect our world

Our posters were colourful and informative

The slogans were catchy and memorable

Our illustrations were clear and bold

We all caught the recycling bug

We aim to make the world a better place for all

We followed this with a debate

Should people be fined for not recycling?

The proposers won by one vote!

Ours were created in 2017!

Colours were inspired by the original

We looked carefully at the details

Each person's drawing became unique

3D Shapes and Nets

We started by making wire frames

This allowed us to make all sorts of shapes

Unfolding a 3D shape gave us a net

Checking that the faces were in the correct order

Adding flaps so we could glue them together

We had to be as accurate as possible

This ended up being quite fiddly

We made pyramids...

cuboids...

and cubes

Triangles had to be precise as well

We learnt how to use a compass to be accurate

But it still took a lot of concentration

Royal British Legion - Armistice Day

Year 5 and Year 6 marched to the Normandy Memorial

It commemorates soldiers from the two World Wars

We laid a wreath in remembrance

The flag bearers were soldiers themselves

The Royal British Legion gave us a talk

We finished with wartime party food

Year 6 met on a cold Ash Vale station

We waited for our train to arrive

The train was an adventure in itself!

Everybody was excited about our trip to the Globe

It took a while before anything happened!

This week, Year 6 have visited China

We painted Willow Pattern China

We really enjoyed the fine work and detail

This is an authentic ink set

Chinese characters were hard to copy

This was Chinese lantern making

which took a lot of focus

Everybody learned new skills
