Welcome to Year 1 2018
We have had a fantastic first half-term and the children have adapted well to the big change from Reception to Year 1. We are all so proud!
Here's what we have been up to so far this term.
As part of our new RE topic, 'Why should we look after our world?', we discussed how to keep our planet a nice place to live. The children said that we must keep it tidy and clean! So this afternoon we pretended that we were a clean up team here to tidy up our school environment. The children found lots of rubbish around our school and we have kept it to sort into recyclable and non recyclables next week.
Here are some photos of us on our clean up mission!
We had an amazing day working with Mrs Bryan from 'The Happy Art Company'. We spent the whole day taking part in a printing workshop. We experimented with lots of different printing techniques e.g direct, lino, collagraph and mono-printing! Our work tied in with our topic on 'Houses and Homes'. We looked at works by the artist Hundertwasser and used some of his work as inspiration for our own printing and class canvas.
Here are some photos from our brilliant day! BEST MONDAY EVER!
Mrs Bryan is assembling our class canvas, made with all of our art work, at home and will return it once finished. We will be hanging it pride of place inside school. Photos to come .....
We all dressed up as different characters. Can you guess who we are?
Today we had a go at some traditional Greek dancing. We also designed our own ancient Greek pots, looking at the patterns and recreating them carefully.
Today we had a brilliant morning tasting traditional Greek food! Everyone joined in and tried lots. We found out we don't have many feta cheese lovers in Year 1 but the Greek yoghurt and honey was a winner!
We had an amazing day doing nothing but art! Yippee!
Mrs Bryan from the Happy Art Company came in to do a printing workshop with us this week. We had so much fun and spent all day learning new printing techniques, developing our skills and creating a group collaborative display. We had a go at direct, additive, subtractive, collograph and mono-printing. All our prints were themed around our science unit, plants. We printed fruit, vegetables, flowers and roots. We got super messy but it was ok as we wore our own clothes.
Have a look at some of our work!
Over half term our topic homework was to build a junk model house. We spent the afternoon showing each other our houses, talking about the features and taking photos of our incredible work. We really enjoyed making them and we think our parents did too! Have a look at our photos. No two houses are the same!!
In music we have been working on singing, percussion and playing instruments.
Today the children took part in a drama workshop provided by the company Perform for Schools. The children had to act out various scenarios in relation to the story of The Sword in the Stone.
They had great fun being knights, princesses, statues and saving Excalibur from the evil witch!!
We started our day by having a Greek feast!
We tried some traditional Greek food - cucumber, tomatoes, green and black olives, feta cheese, pitta breads and houmous. Then we finished it off with some Greek yoghurt and honey!
With Mrs Griggs the children made Greek masks.
Today we took part in our own Year 1 Mini Olympics!
We received medals and made our own vine wreaths and Olympic torches!
Welcome to Year 1!
Welcome to our Year 1 class page. The children have had a fantastic first full week! They have worked very hard and are getting used to their new classroom and our Year 1 routines! We have had great fun taking part in a variety of different lessons including Literacy, Art, PE, Topic and ending the week with a brilliant Music lesson!
The children did some excellent practical Numeracy work throughout the week, thinking about numbers and their order, finding one more and less and working in groups. Here are some photos from our lessons.
